“Let’s Play Hard”: Why Proving/Hardening Architecture is the Way to Go for Eddie

Are you ready to transform your data acquisition experience? Join the Eddie Beta Program, where university labs, field researchers, and automation engineers collaborate with our team. By participating, you'll gain early access to a versatile ecosystem, direct support, and the opportunity to shape Eddie’s future. Let’s create a reliable tool together, so you can focus on what matters—innovation and problem-solving. Ready to join us?

We are busy getting Eddie software development finalised, so Eddie is ready for Beta testing. We may also watch reruns of the ABC show Hard Quiz in our spare time, hence the joke in the title “Lets Play Hard” because that’s Tom Gleeson, the hosts call to action at the start of each show. Our goal for Eddie is not only to make Eddie work on the lab bench; we want it to be hardened for the real world which is a long-term goal, and we can’t do it alone.

It’s incredibly tempting to chase the newest chip, the latest trendy sensor but it can be a siren song because it’s the unknown. In field deployment and critical laboratory research, novelty can be a liability. The best asset an engineering team can have is hardware hardening. And hardware only hardens when you play hard with it. It requires repeated use in the messy, unpredictable real world to prove its worth.

Today, we want to invite you to join us to help us build that certainty. We’ve love to have a range of beta testers with different applications so there is more variety in the way Eddie is interacted with so if there are any issues that arise, they can be picked up and fixed and then Eddie can be retested. Sometimes you can’t see a problem unless its across multiple units.

So, What Exactly is “Hardened” Hardware and Why is it Important?

When a piece of hardware or software is first designed, it exists in an idealized state. It works flawlessly on a clean workbench, under stable ambient temperatures, powered by a perfect laboratory power supply.

But as you know the real world is chaotic, electrically noisy, there is thermal cycling, vibrating equipment, spotty cellular signals, and users who pull out cables while data is writing, or plug cables in the wrong way around.

Hardware and firmware become “hardened” when they survive these variables over thousands of hours across hundreds of completely different use cases. Every time a common architecture is pushed to its limits, its hidden vulnerabilities are exposed, patched, and engineered out of existence. When you choose a hardware architecture that has been used repeatedly across a dozen different projects, you aren’t buying unproven tech—you are buying certainty.

The Vision: A Solid Common Foundation of Building Blocks which just work!

We didn’t build Eddie to be a fragile, single-use sandbox. We built it to be a standardized, deeply understood modular architecture.

Our goal is to create a common set of building blocks (Packs, Pods, and Peas) that you can use across all of your projects, unlocking a massive operational advantage:

      • Predictable Behaviour: Identical underlying communication protocols mean no unexpected system crashes when adding new sensor types.

      • Interchangeable Spares: If a module gets damaged in the field, you don’t hunt down niche components. You snap a standard, hardened Eddie module into place.

      • Cumulative Trust: The confidence you build using Eddie on a simple lab bench experiment carries over perfectly when you deploy that same hub to a remote field environment.

But to make this ecosystem truly unbreakable, we cannot design it in a vacuum. We need to play hard in the real world.

Let’s Build It Together: Join the Eddie Beta Program

We have done the heavy lifting on Eddie’s development to date, and now to test it we are looking for collaborative partners—university labs, field researchers, and automation engineers—to become Eddie Beta Testers. By joining our beta program, you aren’t just trying out a piece of gear; you are actively collaborating with our engineering team to harden the hardware and software.

        • You get early access to a highly versatile, modular data acquisition ecosystem, direct engineering support from our team, and the opportunity to help build the tool you’ve always wished you had in the lab.

        • Your feedback will directly shape our active patch cycles and hardware revisions. So, your ideas will become part of Eddie.

        • Maybe Eddie will also become a permanent part of your lab too, and we can let you know when new developments happen and give you the opportunity to be a part of them too.

      Stop Re-Engineering the Foundations

Your team’s brilliant minds should be focused on the data they are collecting and the problems they are solving— Let’s build a hardened, invisible utility that just works together, so we can all focus on innovating where it matters.
